Overcoming Emotional Infidelity in Marriage

With nearly 50% of marriages ending in divorce, couples are faced with a barrage of problems in their marriage. Emotional infidelity in marriage is a frequent problem that may result in rifts in the relationship. Emotional affairs may not involve a physical affair. However, physical attraction between two individuals may exist while never acted upon. Many times, emotional affairs may be more damaging than a physical one with another individual. The injured party may feel betrayed or hurt by the relationship or bond formed with a partner outside their marriage.

What is an Emotional Affair?

When a person is having an emotional affair, the person is sharing their most intimate feelings with someone outside of their relationship. The person engaging in the affair may feel closer to the person they interact with frequently. The interaction may cause a change in the cheating spouse's behav ior around the injured party. The spouse may withdraw affection and emotion or the spouse may request physical interaction more frequently with his or her spouse while fantasizing about the other person. Emotional infidelity in marriage is a common occurrence.
